Diana – The Beauty You Are

I often think about how skin of a different hues are depicted in media. Do we even notice and how do people feel about it? This portrait series explores some of those curiosities through the reflections women of color shared. This series is a piece of the capstone project of my undergraduate studies in digital communications at the University of Baltimore.

She [a Costa Rican waitress] said, ‘You the negress’, in Spanish, to my mom. I remember not understanding. I remember watching my mom get really angry and really upset. Then I watched her transition from being angry to being embarrassed.

I’ll go to the theater and I’ll purposefully look to see who the person of color is in that movie. Probably 6-7 times out of 10, I’m not going to find a person of color [in a leading role] in that movie.
